Stereotype essay for english class

December 17th, 2007 (09:11 pm)

Everyday people are fighting a war in society because of the narrow mindedness of people and their problem with stereotyping. Nobody is free to live comfortably because it seems there is always a shadow behind their back judging them. These problems have gone out of proportion; when will we find our voice and start changing these problems for the better. There is something wrong with society’s sense of reality towards female gamers.

I am one who believes in equality, and if our community wants to achieve equality they need to stop categorizing and stereotyping. Putting labels and ideas to go with different stereotypes doesn’t achieve anything but false accusations. Labels are everywhere, on food items, album covers, and clothing. These labels serves us well when we are looking to purchase a product but somewhere along the line we’ve become a label society. Subconsciously, we observe and catalog our differences with everyone around us. We’ve done this since the dawn of man, as it is another one of our survival mechanisms. I think it’s human nature to label people as belonging to a certain preconceived group. However; it’s becoming a negative fashion and underneath it all, our motivations regard our survival and security of status in society. If you drill down any subject matter to it’s core, that’s what you’ll find. Stereotyping is not a new problem and has led to riots, segregation and war. It’s hard to forget how much branding is going on the world for what people wear, and do. It seems most people would rather judge someone rather then get to know who they really are, and it’s causing a problem.

Being a female who is a long time gamer, I can honestly say that I have had the sickening pleasure of having misogynistic gaming males make juvenile quips at my expense. There are some people out there who take great pleasure in trying to disarm female gamers with their behavior when playing online. I have experienced this female gamer discrimination because I do no subscribe to the conventional standards of a gamer due to my gender. In general when people encounter a female on a video game they harass you. In a way, from morning to night, twenty four hours a day you are, in some shape or form made aware that you do not meet the standards of a gamer. This overall oppression of society is taking its toll. Gradually and without realization, all those beautiful feelings inside you that relate you your gender, identity, and your understanding of your self start wilting away. The male population is generalizing that all females who resort to video games must not have a personal life or are unattractive. If you are skilled at video games the males automatically assume you spend day in and day out without socializing in real life. They assume you sit around all day gaining weight and hiding from the world. This stereotype is something that people cant let go of. The idea that you have to be good looking to have a life outside of games, or ugly to have skill at games is a sad stereotype.
Female gamers should be equal to male gamers because depending on the aspirations of the gamers determine how good they are, their gender has nothing to do with it. There are so many variables ( natural reflex, coordination, comprehension, ability to grasp the controls, interpreting situations, and available to time to play) that saying one gender is better then the other is ridiculous. Female gamers are starting to demand equality but most of the time we get shot down and aren’t being taken seriously. Everyone should know that women can play games to, it’s common sense. Yet males and gaming industries treat us like a unicorn for being a female gamer. There comes a time in life when people need to step up and toe the line. A time when they must speak out for the gaming world. Women gamers are forced to fight prejudice to get equal representation. Society should be empowering female gamers by eliminating the negative online stereotypes towards them. Online gaming has typically been dominated by men, but that is changing. Wake up and pay attention, we can’t afford to ignore this problem. Start viewing female gaming not just as a matter of gender, but in a more holistic perspective that involves the heart, and feelings, that is, the body, mind and spirit.
